The island of Oahu in Hawaii has been one of my favourite places for as long as I can remember. I am a self inflicted Hawaiiophile, who has been perfecting her Hawaiian style barbecue and tending to her garden of frangipani trees with the aloha spirit so freely accessible on the trade wind swept isles.

On a recent visit to Honolulu I was introduced to a little organic cafe that only further increased my love for everything mahalo. On the side of a busy carpark in a strip of stores opposite Walmart on Keeaumoku Street sits HiBlend Health Bar & Cafe. On an unseasonably  cold rain soaked Friday night in the midst of a Honolulu blackout, I found myself in need of something healthy, fresh and delicious and it was recommended that I pay Joey Suguhara a visit at his sustainable and ethically responsible store.

Chef Joey has created a noteworthy menu where he uses locally sourced organic products to produce his juices, smoothies, salads and sandwiches. I was taken with his selection of smart sounding and great tasting smoothies and made a pledge to myself to continue eating and drinking healthy varied foods long after I had left my island vacation behind.

Here is my collection of HiBlend inspired smoothies, because if you can’t have the real thing, you can produce something delicious that is good for you in your high speed blender at home. Mahalo Joey for the inspiration, collaboration and motivation!
